As I write these words, people–okay, Democrats–are gathering at 2850 Broadway in San Francisco, to donate large sums of money to Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie, who faces a tougher than expected reelection fight this year. The house, which sold for $3.9 million back in 1998, is owned by billionaire Oracle founder Larry Ellison, who also owns 98 percent of the island of Lanai, among other holdings and baubles.

Here’s how SFGate.com described the house in a May 23, 2013 story:

“This contemporary five-bedroom, four-level Pacific Heights mansion, more than 10,000 square feet, is primarily used for entertaining. It should provide a panoramic vantage point for the America’s Cup yacht race (Ellison and Oracle sponsor America’s team) – especially since Ellison settled his lawsuit with the neighbors about their redwoods blocking his sweeping bay views.”

Anyhoo, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported yesterday that “Ellison is holding the evening event with Marc Benioff, the founder of Salesforce.com, according to an invitation.”

Ellison contributed a little more than $3.1 million to various candidates and organizations during the 2012 election, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Though some of that money went to Democratic candidates, the vast majority–$3 million–went to Restore Our Future, a super PAC set up to help Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

According to Abercrombie’s Notice of Intent to Hold a Fundraiser (which was made public by the state Campaign Spending Commission a few minutes ago), there are three “suggested contributions” per person: $1,000, $2,500 and $6,000. How marvelously progressive.
